Strictly speaking you do not need a referral to see a specialist. However, only patients with a valid Medicare referral are eligible for a rebate (refund) from Medicare, which covers a large part of the cost of seeing a specialist.

Yes, referrals where your doctor has requested a specific procedure can be booked without having a consultation first.

The waiting time to see a specialist can vary, but is usually within 1-3 weeks. Urgent referrals can generally be accommodated within a week, particularly if your doctors contacts us directly.

The cost of a consultation depends on whether it is an ‘initial’ or ‘review’ appointment. Medicare covers a large proportion of this amount, with the usual out-of-pocket cost ranging from $60-$120 (initial) and $30-$60 (review).

After the procedure you will be offered something to eat and drink, with most patients feeling almost ‘back to normal’ by the time they leave the hospital.

Our specialists perform endoscopy procedures at Epworth Eastern, Knox Private Hospital, and Mitcham Private Hospital.

Bowel Preparation Instructions

To ensure a successful colonoscopy it is very important that your bowel (colon) is adequately prepared prior to the procedure. This involves modifying your diet the day prior to your procedure AND drinking ‘bowel preparation’ liquid. These steps are outlined in the following instruction sheets and are designed to clean and empty your bowel.

If you have any concerns or questions regarding your bowel preparation please contact our rooms directly.
