What is Open Access Endoscopy?
Open access endoscopy refers to the process whereby your GP can refer directly for an endoscopy procedure (gastroscopy and/or colonoscopy) without first needing a specialist consultation. This can be useful in situations where your GP has determined that you definitely need an endoscopy and may reduce the time taken to undertake the procedure.

Common scenarios when open access endoscopy is used include:
- After returning a positive bowel cancer screening test (FOBT)
- Patients undertaking a ‘screening’ procedure for a strong family history
- Patients returning for a ‘surveillance’ procedure, e.g. colonoscopy after having polyps removed in the past.
Patients booked for a procedure through the open access pathway will meet their specialist before the procedure to discuss their history and the indication for the procedure. Following the procedure, your specialist will discuss the results with you, as well as provide a detailed written report. This will also be sent to your GP and any other relevant specialists in your medical team.
Patients suitable for open access endoscopy are generally fit and well, without complex medical issues. Specific instructions are required for patients taking diabetic or blood thinning medications. Please contact us to discuss your suitability.
